What is a TMJ dysfunction or TMJ pain?
Temporomandibular joints (TMJ) act like sliding hinges, connecting each side of the jawbone to the skull. Pain in these joints as well as the surrounding muscles that control jaw movement can stem from certain disorders/dysfunctions, the cause of which can sometimes be difficult to determine.
What can I expect from a TMJ massage?
Most people who suffer from temporomandibular dysfunctions have massaged their own jaw to provide a bit of relief. Unfortunately, many of the muscles and structures involved are found below the surface and need to be accessed intra-orally by trained and practiced hands for the best results. If you have pain when chewing, talking, or you wake up with headaches from clenching your teeth, you might find that massage therapy can help.
